While some people in society believe that fostering competition in schools is important, others believe that teaching children how to cooperate instead of competing will benefit them in the long run. I concur with the latter, since cooperation teaches kids how to be socially and politically responsible. This essay will explain all sides of the controversy as well as my position.

On the one side, there are people who think that instilling a sense of competitiveness is important because it will inspire people to work harder. They contend that when there is competition in the classroom, children are more driven to work hard and achieve success. For instance, in Nana Kobina Gyan Primary School, each class receives a prize for finishing first in class, which has motivated many students to work hard to achieve the prize. Therefore, the competition encourages kids to learn effectively.

Yet, I, alongside certain philosophical schools, believe that the feeling of working together will benefit children in the long run because it improves their social skills. Children who study in groups will improve their social interaction skills, which will come in handy when they seek employment. I, for instance, practiced as a nurse and learned social skills through working with others during the nursing training. While working together, learners appreciate the contributions of others, and they greatly respect their colleagues. Teamwork also helps learners acquire leadership skills, and some of these learners can easily be recognized through the manner in which they assist their colleagues.

In conclusion, some people think that competition should be emphasized because it gives kids more motivation to learn, but I disagree because I believe that teamwork will benefit kids since it will develop their leadership and communication skills for when they enter the workforce.
